Before submitting your website to a directory you must understand the difference between Search Engine and Web Directory. You can search in both search engine and directories, but the method they use are different thus you will get different search results. Technology used in search engine is known as Robots. It crawl the web for new and updated content and adds it to its database automatically. You can also submit your website to search engines to get your site indexed fast. Here you only have to give your website URL and search engine will do the rest. Directories are run and managed by humans. Some of the directories use automated script to approve websites while majority of the directories are manual. The webmaster creates categories and sub-categories in the directory and before approving your site he reviews your website. Yahoo and DMOZ are the two biggest directories on the web. DMOZ is currently providing free listings while Yahoo charges $299/year. Submitting your site to a web directory is not very difficult process. Categories present in web directory are based upon complete website instead of a single page. Means your website can only fall in one or two categories. When you submit your website moderator reviews it and categorizes it correctly if it is not. Majority of the web directories provide free submission facility. So, you can say that directory submission is very cost effective and natural means of promoting your website on the web. |
